Trust and estate tax reporting can be a confusing topic for many tax professionals. Not only does the topic have a language and terminology all its own, the income and deduction reporting may be unfamiliar to many. In this seminar, we will discuss some of the terms and concepts associated with trusts and estates. We will also talk about when income or capital gain may be taxed to the entity versus when it can be distributed to the beneficiaries to be taxed at the individual level. We will also discuss the allowable deductions for estates and trusts.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand basic trust and estate terminology.
  • Conclude if the estate/trust or its beneficiaries are to report income.
  • Understand the §645 election by a trust.
  • Define the allowable expenses of a trust or estate.
  • Recognize when a tax return is required to be filed by the estate or trust.
